Thursday 16th June 2016
Winners of the Make Europe Work!® Business Awards 2016 were announced at the COBCOE Gala Dinner on 15 June. The awards, which recognise strategic European trade development achievements, were sponsored by London City Airport.
The Breakthrough Trade Award was presented to AHDB Beef and Lamb, a division of the UK’s Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board, nominated by the British Polish Chamber of Commerce. AHDB Beef and Lamb has generated a new demand for British lamb in Poland, taking it from a niche product to a supermarket staple worth an estimated £43 million in export sales over the next four years.
Jean-Pierre Garnier, Head of AHDB Exports, said: “The award is important for us. It’s a measure of the collaboration between the farming and food sectors, and the network of the British Polish Chamber of Commerce.”
The Trade Development in Overseas Markets Award went to TransferWise, a successful fintech startup, which was nominated by the British Estonian Chamber of Commerce. TransferWise uses an online peer-to-peer platform to match currency buyers and sellers, reducing the costs associated with foreign exchange. It now has over a million customers sending £500 million every month across 500 currency routes to 60 countries.
It is COBCOE’s objective to showcase and highlight entrepreneurial drive and ambition to break through, grow and develop business with the UK’s largest global trading bloc. The awards represent the continuing delivery of this objective.
Congratulating the winners of the Make Europe Work!® Business Awards 2016, David Thomas MBE, Executive Chairman of COBCOE, said: “Making Europe work for the business community is at the heart of everything we do. It is our pleasure to celebrate businesses that have successfully expanded into European markets.
“In these uncertain times, we continue to lead the way in calling for reform, working with our members, affiliates and partners to make Europe a better place to do business through research, debates, representation, conferences, communications and the local expertise that our network provides.”
Bryn Owen, Marketing Director of London City Airport, the awards sponsor, commented: “People travelling through London City Airport conduct £11bn worth of trade in Europe annually. The airport enables trade by providing quick and easy links between key commercial centres, and we are therefore thrilled to be a part of these awards, recognising the best in trade across the Continent. Many congratulations to the winners AHDB Beef and Lamb and TransferWise.”
The guest speaker at the Gala Dinner was Ken Olisa OBE, Founder of Resotration Partners and HM Lord Lieutenant of Greater London. Read about the Chamber of the Year award winners here
